(Kemptville) – Upper Canada District School Board Trustee Joan Hodge is elated with the news that a new high school will be built in Kemptville to replace North Grenville District High School. Hodge has worked tirelessly for several years to convince the Ministry of Education that the school should be replaced.
“We’ve seen new schools constructed elsewhere in eastern Ontario over the last number of years and while that was hard to swallow because we knew North Grenville needs to be replaced, I always held out hope that the ministry would eventually come through,” outlined Hodge. “This is a very special day in the history of North Grenville.”
The Upper Canada District School Board will receive $17.3 million from the Ministry of Education to build the new high school, which the board had designated as “prohibitive to repair”.
The new school will be able to accommodate 750 pupil places. The targeted opening for the new facility is 2012. The project details are subject to the approval of the ministry’s Education Capital advisor, yet to be appointed.
“Building a new high school is a huge undertaking because of the various components required including a cafetorium, gymnasium, and state of the art technology. We will have to wait a few years for all of the work to be completed but at the end of the day this school will serve the educational needs of many generations to come,” said Hodge.
