(Mallorytown) – Front of Yonge Elementary School (FOY) Parent Council hosted their annual Welcome Back Barbecue and Parent Council Fundraiser recently and acknowledged the many community supporters who have donated time and money to help with Parent Council’s schoolyard enhancement project.
Approximately 400 students and family members enjoyed hamburgers, hotdogs, apples and iced tea while Parent Council members acknowledged Kingsley Grant of Ripnet and Lindsey Haley of Precision Contracting for the companies' recent donations of $750 each to help build the new ice rink located on FOY school grounds.
“The rink will be ready this winter thanks to the amazing community and corporate support we’ve received,” said Parent Council Chair Alison Wilson. “In partnership with the school, our township will be maintaining the rink and the fire department will flood it.”
“Parent Council has been fundraising for three years for the schoolyard enhancement project,” Wilson said. “Our final goal is a new sign for the end of the driveway.
“We thought it would take five to 10 years to complete but it’s only taken three.”
Parent Council also acknowledged Ian Woodhall of Lafarge Canada Inc. for the company’s donation of plywood for the rink boards. A week before school started, Parent Council and a group of community members volunteered to start building the rink but at the last minute realized there wasn’t enough wood.
Wilson said the evening was the perfect time to make the announcements as the barbecue always attracts so many community members.
“This is our first big event of the year,” she said. “It welcomes our new and old families. The whole community is here."
“We always get a great turnout,” said Principal Marsha McNair. “And, this year we wanted to promote healthy living so we are offering apples instead of chips.”
In addition to the barbecue, visitors were invited to take part in Parent Council’s 50/50 draw and fundraising raffle for a Nintendo Wii console and a Wii Fit, peruse booths set up by Communities in Bloom, Girl Guides of Canada, Leeds Grenville Emergency Medical Services, and the Front of Yonge Fire Department, and tour the school to meet with teachers and staff.
