(Kemptville) - The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Champions for Kids Foundation is seeking centipedes to raise funds to help kids in need.
The Board’s children’s foundation is hosting 1 and 5-kilometer centipede fun runs as part of its first annual Champions for Kids Foundation Fun Run/Walk event June 14 at the Ferguson Forest Centre in Kemptville.
The centipede race consists of teams of 4-8 members. The challenge of the centipede race is for all members to be attached. Each team has a theme for their “attachment” costumes. In other runs, teams have dressed up as brides connected by their trains, inmates attached by their chains and a Mexican bandidos team whose members wore sombreros and were attached by their ponchos. The objective is for all members to remain attached until they reach the finish line.
The centipede runs challenge teams to work together and build trust and confidence in one another. Teams must raise a minimum of $100 in pledges in order to participate. Funds raised will benefit the foundation.
“The race encourages team spirit and will raise awareness of the foundation,” said Sarah Crawford, race organizer.
Since organizers are actively trying to recruit students to participate in the run, Crawford also believes training for the centipede runs will complement Quality Daily Phys. Ed programs operating within our schools.
The UCDSB Champions for Kids Foundation helps families in need meet their children’s athletic, artistic, dental and medical needs. Since January 2008 the foundation has raised over $70,000 to help kids in need play soccer, go to camp, purchase glasses, as well as take piano and guitar lessons.
The June 14 event will also include 1 and 5 kilometer individual runs. Organizers have lined up free children’s face painting and entertainment.
Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the North Grenville Municipal Centre, and the event begins at 10:00 a.m.
